This means it's the best you can get before going into Sony's high-end ES line which all cost 4 figures. It is the only non-ES Sony you can buy that has networking capability. The STR-DN1020 competes in the $500-$600 price range with models from Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, Harmon-Kardon, etc. So how does the Sony stack up to the competition? Pretty well in my opinion. The sole editorial review I found at the time of this writing was on CNET, where they found the Sony did not sound as good as the competition. I'd take that opinion with a grain of salt as such things are highly subjective. The fact is your speakers dictate how good things sound far more than your electronics. So if you care about sound, spend most of your budget on speakers. A more objective comparison between competitors is features for the money. This is where the Sony stacks up pretty well. While it has 4 HDMI... It's been a banner fifteen months. I've been able to slowly upgrade to my A/V system from a crappy one to one of extraordinary magnitude. Yes... my days of watching "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" on the Sony Betamax are over. Now I've been out of the A/V game for some time and have been boning up on what the new technology has to offer. There is amazing gear and technology that is available to people at great prices. The journey I've made, and I'm not talking about the band that replaced Steve Perry with a dude they found on YouTube, has allowed me to update my A/V gear to include the following... 1 Sony STRDN1020 Receiver 1 Sony Bravia NX 800 Series 52' LED TV 1 Sony PS3 Slim 160GB 4 Mediabridge HDMI cables 1 Belkin Subwoofer Cable Sure I'm a loyal Sony customer, but it's because they have treated me well over the years and I have the stash of still working, but outdated, gear to prove it... All I have to do is change the input from DVD to another setting then back to DVD and it works. Annoying but it still works. Also, on the HD sound setting I can only get one setting. The instructions state that it should have 3 sound settings. I can only get one. I had my unit professionally installed and the installer thinks it may be an issue with the receiver. But it works for the most part, so I will continue to monitor the situation. For the price I paid for this unit, it is a great value. I replaced a high end Yamaha unit that was damaged during a move for this mid range unit. It was a last minute purchase and just didn't want to spend a lot of money on a 2nd receiver within a month. I didn't expect it to be perfect, but it is pretty close. It does the job, maybe not the best. I may regret not going with the pioneer top mid-range system. I got this for... Read more |
