I've stayed away from home theatre for most of my life. For audio, I've invested in reasonably high-end specialized gear, so have become cautious about mass-produced consumer electronics. I mean, how good can this thing be if it only costs $400?

The answer: Very.

Most importantly, it sounds great. I'm using this with Orb Audio speakers and a Rel 218 subwoofer. The Orbs are inexpensive good speakers. The sub is something audio-geeks like. This combination sounds exceptional.

Setup is straightforward. I've only done it manually, but I will probably experiment with the automated setup at some point. The interface is straightforward and the instructions are clear. There are a lot of useful features in this box, but yet it is free of the bloat that one sees in the huge monster-sized hulking testosterone-overdose receivers on display in places like bestbuy. If you want elegance and comparative simplicity, without sacrificing sound quality, this is... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it., November 27, 2011
This review is from: Marantz NR1402 AV Receiver (Electronics)
I have only had the receiver for about 2 weeks, but I love it. I like all of HDMI inputs (that are labeled for easy installation of the other components). I do not have it hooked up to surround speakers or subwoofer (we live in an condo), but the sound is better than my old pioneer VSX-816. I have 2 Bose 501 speakers with a Bose center speaker, and the base is great even without the subwoofer. The set up with the microphone was convenient (and easy). The only thing I can't do, that I wish I could (that would give it 5 stars) is to listen to the radio while my son plays video games.

The reason I bought it was for the compact size. My wife bought an entertainment center she liked, and I had to find a receiver that fit it. This was only one of two that I found. But, I feel very lucky, because I think this is a big improvement, and I'm happy I had to make the switch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like it better than I thought I would, December 28, 2011
This review is from: Marantz NR1402 AV Receiver (Electronics)
Setup was fairly easy. Using it in 2.1 channel only, hooked up to my computer via digital. Only thing was setup slightly off from manual. Was listed you could run mains "full range" but in reality you had to pick a high pass of 40hz or higher. Maybe it was a firmware update since it was printed? Sound quality is great.
Update: Played around with it a little. Hooked it up to computer via HDMI, works pretty cool since it has pass through. No need to turn it on if you don't need or want sound.
Push OSD on the remote it gives you a brief summary of everything then goes away in a few seconds. All things are just laid over top of desktop. It has a screen saver that goes all black in 30sec default, good if computer is off. When adjusting anything it pops up just as OSD does.
